Sean McKinney: What is the origin of the word yoyo? Please email any help you can offer.
John O'Donnell: The toy known as the yo-yo originated in the Philippines, and I believe it was popularized in the U.S. near the turn of the century by American servicemen returning from duty in the Spanish-American War and the subsequent Filipino Insurrection (use of the term in English dates back to at least 1915). The origin of the term is unclear, but it is probably derived from Tagalog or another language of the Philippines.
