f. ojeda: someone knows what's the origin of the name "Texas"?
Dan Stalker: In the 1540's the Spaniards were exploring venturing out of Mexico and exploring to the North. One expedition under Coronado explored the area of the Texas panhandle and found a local tribe of indians called Tewas. This may have been corrupted first into Spanish and then into English until today we have Texas. An offshoot of Coronado's expedition also visited a cluster of indian pueblos on both sides of the upper Rio Grande called 'Tiquex' which again could have passed through Spanish to English as Texas. Either way, the origin is north american indian.
