Where did the term "shrink" originate from when referring to psychiatrists?
Probably around WWII, psychiatrists (working to deflate delusions of grandeur, for example) were referred to as "head shrinkers," alluding derisively the practice of head-hunting peoples.
This comes from older beliefs, along the line of believing people felt bad due to toomuch blood and could be alieviated by blood letting with leeches. A patient would see a psychiatrist because his head was too full, and he would unload on the psychiatrist... thus the term head shrinker. Or shrink.
