Nick: Who was Shanks and why is does getting on Shanks' Pony mean walking?
Bill Doggett: Shanks are legs. A shanks pony is for someone who doesn't own a real horse.
Dick McQ: Shanks' mare is the expression I've always heard. Random House Dictionary has mare, not pony. (Only dictionary of three consulted that includes the idiom at all). Is shanks' pony a regionalism?
