Red letter day

Jim Jackson and Allan Leow: What is the origin of "It's a red letter day"?

Doug: The term 'red letter day' comes from the practice of marking saints' days and other holy days on the calendar in red. Because of this it has come to mean any special, fortunate or just a happy day. Although the OED first cites the phrase in 1704 it wouldn't surprise me to find that it was a much older expression.
