Please HELP!!! Does anyone out there know the origin of the word hypochondria and why does is describe a person who thinks they are ill???
It comes of the Greek, "hypo" (under or beneath) and "chondros" (cartilage). There had been a theory, c. 1660's, that the condition of depressed spirit that is often accompanied by imaginary physical ailments originates from an actual illness of the area under the cartilagenous tissues of the breast bone.
