grasping at straws
christine gilpatrick
I know the term 'grasping at straws' to signify trial and error attempts or any desperate attempt with no real knowledge if you're on the right track. Does anyone know from where the term originates? I have some ideas, but I'm really just grasping at straws.
Frank Pierce
I believe that the term came from the actions of a man drowning after a shipwreck. If nothing else was available, he'd be ready to grasp at a straw floating in the water. "It's better'n nuthin'."
