The game was invented by scottish men to escape thier wives. It was originally refered to by the first rule they placed on the game "Gentlemen only ladies forbidden". It was later shortened to the term golf. Even today many courses have seperate courses for women.
Nope. "Golf" was the only four-letter word not already taken (as any golfer would tell you). Either that or the Scottish gowf meaning "to strike." Alternatively, the Dutch kolf refering to a club for hitting balls.
