For cryin' out loud
Becka Orgill
my best friend said this phrase the other day, and then pondered where it might have originated. I decided to look into it on the web, and stumbled upon this terrific site! Any ideas would be welcomed
The originating exclamation is "for Christ's sake" which is so often taken as charged expression and in some sector's regarded as a violation of the commandment in Moses's law barring taking the deity of the Abrahamic tradition's "name in vain" that it's sometimes euphamized. "For Pete's sake" is a common substitute (alluding to the St. Peter of Christian mythology). "For crying out loud" is another. It has the virtue of having the same initial sounds (For KRAhY-), and further twists the expectation with a somewhat humorous extension.
