Ends meet
Does anyone know the origin of the phrase, "Ends meet?"
I suspect it'll be hard to track down a specific source for this one. It's been suggested that it's based on managing a yearly budget so that the end of one year and the beginning of the next meet without an embarrassing gap. But there's also the embarrassing gap if one end of your belt won't meet the other. "Making ends meet" is important in construction, and dressmaking, and making pastry, etc., etc. and I'd guess is just a common phrase.
