Cup of Joe
Does anybody know the origin of this phrase for a cup of coffee?
It's a variation on java which has been used a reference to coffee since the mid-nineteenth century.

Apart from the alliteration, I haven't found why "java" had been varied so. One theory that occurs to me is banality. The use of "Joe" to refer to common guy (an "average Joe") dates to about the same time, and perhaps its the routine nature of coffee consumption that led to the linkage.
