a cold
why is this virus (I have a doozy) called that and since when?
The virus is named after the condition which was named after the folk wisdom of the 13th century which held that it's caused by cool ambient temperatures.

Further to that theory, almost every disease was attributed to the air one breathed, and it's easy to see why, given the air-transmitted sicknesses like the passing of Bubonic plague from the sick to the well.

It also made sense, absent any sort of microbe theory, that breathing bad air would make one sick, and of course, we know that there's an element of truth to it, given smog-induced sicknesses.

As late as the 19th Century, yellow fever and malaria were attributed to the breathing of swamp air.
