I'd like to know the origin, ethimology, the use and examples of "water clocks".
Which ancient civilizations built clepsydras and how did they name them?
Your question(s) has (have) a fairly broad scope. The post might go beyond what an etymology forum has to offer. As far the etymology of that one word goes, however, it's the Greek, "klepto," as in "theft," plus "hydra" as in "water," but perhaps an encycolopędia can get you more of the depth you're seeking.
