||The farewell had been the wish that "God be with ye" ("ye" being an archaic "you"). The "with" was elided, and the "be" and "ye" abbreviated to form "God b'ye" and then the semantics were lost altogether as this became "good bye." "Bye" is simply a contraction, and "bye bye" an infantalism.|
