bye bye

Where did this start? Goodbye, then bye, then bye bye?
Just curious.

The farewell had been the wish that "God be with ye" ("ye" being an archaic "you"). The "with" was elided, and the "be" and "ye" abbreviated to form "God b'ye" and then the semantics were lost altogether as this became "good bye." "Bye" is simply a contraction, and "bye bye" an infantalism.

A vintage Gracie Fields recording from the first World War has that great English music hall entertainer singing "good-by-ee".

Makes me wonder if the original sound didn't remain a bit longer than we might otherwise believe. I don't know, merely speculating.
