angler
Virginia: Anyone know where the fishing term "angler" came from?
Bill Doggett: Angle, or angul, is Middle English for "hook." It is a very ancient word -- the Sanskrit is ankusá, the Greek is ónkos, and the Latin is uncus. It probably comes into Middle English in a slightly roundabout way, though, from the Greek ankylos (bent).
